Excerpt:

He looked flushed, and it reminded Ava of the many times they’d been out in the summer heat playing as children. However, something about his appearance today affected her differently. She’d noticed it the moment he picked her up and swung her around. A strange stirring in her stomach had sent heat rushing over her body.

She’d assumed it was only embarrassment from his picking her up like a child, but now she wondered. He’d only looked her way as he came toward the table, and her heart began to flutter.

“I don’t believe we’ve met before.” John looked at Jayne as he took the empty seat at the table.

“No, we haven’t,” Jayne said.

“Forgive me,” Ava apologized. “In all the excitement of your return I forgot to introduce you to my friend Miss Jayne Tippens. Jayne moved to Avondale while you were at the university. We were doing some shopping when we ran into your mother waiting for your arrival.”

He nodded, but gave Ava a puzzled look. “Did you not receive my last letter?”
