Isbel Kensington's lack of paranormal Talent makes her unique, especially given her powerful paranormal family who run the planet Delmorna. Isbel's studies into ancient diseases uncover an old family secret which threatens the stability of the government run by Isbel's devious sister Dru.

Cyrus Durant is a cloned human and undercover cop who has to act as Isbel's Paid Male during her research holiday. He has to get close to her and determine if she's involved in Dru’s treasonous plots. Cyrus has never been this close to a woman. The experience is overwhelming, especially when he and Isbel start to form an intimate psychic bond.

As Isbel's research unearths the truth about the planet's history, she and Cyrus become targets in a deadly political struggle. In a final confrontation with her family, Isbel finds out just how deeply blood ties run -- and how easily they can be severed.

EXCERPT:

Cyrus moved so Isbel was slightly behind him, his body blocking hers. “Are you threatening Isbel?”

“I don’t have to threaten her.” Dru’s tattoos writhed as she spoke. “Everyone from the Three Families will threaten her. Don’t you understand? If you find something that damages the family, your relationship to Kensington won’t help you.”

“He hates me and I hate him. Do you mean that relationship?”

Her half-sister shot her a pitying look. “He’s helped you since you were a child,” Dru said in a quiet, sad voice. Isbel heard the rosy glow of Truth and stepped back uncertainly, almost treading on Cyrus. “He made sure you got into the right schools and made sure you got a good job. He watched out for you all this time. He loved your mother. She was probably the only one he ever did love.” Dru’s face twisted with pity. “He didn’t love my mother. I think he tolerated her because she helped your mother when she was ill. He loves you. He’s proud of you.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Think about it, Isbel.” Dru pushed away from the dual-car, shaking her bright burgundy hair. “He’s done everything he can to help you. You’re the only one of us he loved and you didn’t even know it.” Her eyes swept over Cyrus. “If you care about her, watch out. If her research uncovers something that will harm us, even being a member of the family won’t help her.”

“I’ve never been a member of the family!” Isbel cried, tears rolling down her face.

Dru smiled. “Whose fault was that?” She walked to the middle of the clearing and shimmered, assuming the form of a lithe, thin wolf. The canine snarled, showing sharp white teeth, then wheeled and loped away into the woods.
