Sheriff Luke Hayden knows Talipatche isn't your typical county--the rye crops are poisonous, spiders fly, and folks say a dead woman walks the cornfields at night. Luke wants to protect his citizens; he's just running out of citizens to protect.

Megan Moreno needs a break from seven years of bad luck with the LAPD. A small sheriff's department in Colorado sounds like the perfect place to recover, but all too soon, she discovers that bad things don't just happen in LA. They happen everywhere.

Someone is plotting to kill the most hated woman in town. As suspicious incidents pile up, a storm that just won't leave blows into town, forcing Luke and Megan to shove aside the unexpected attraction between them and focus on saving Talipatche--in more ways than one.

If they fail, the aftermath truly could be haunting. For everyone.

Excerpt:

Staring at a half-naked porn star in the middle of the night might be misconstrued as peeping. That wouldn't look good on his resume if he ever got serious about leaving this hole in the wall. As he turned the wheel, Melody's door opened and she ran outside. She had thrown on sandals and a sweater but no pants. When she reached the mailbox, he could see her black eye and cut lip in the glare of the headlights. Mascara ran down her face in jet-like trails.

"What the hell?"
He turned off the car and set the parking brake. Wind caught the door as he stepped onto the blacktop, ripping the handle from his hands. Air howled through the trees, and a trashcan clattered across the road. Tumbleweeds chased it, entangling themselves in the bushes that lined the sidewalk.

He closed the door and turned to face the blonde, bending into the wind and holding his cap to his head. "What's going on, Melody?"

"Oh, God, Sheriff, if I tell you something do you promise to keep me safe? You won't let them kill me, right? They said they'd kill me. They said..." She broke off and clutched at his jacket, burying her head into his chest. "Promise you won't let them kill me!"

He took her arms and maneuvered her to face him. "Melody, you're gonna have to calm down. I am going to help you, but you need to give me something to work with first."

"But it's Curtis," she cried, her voice rising to hysteria. "I think--I think they killed him!"
