He sat back in his chair and looked up at her. Her concern for his welfare warmed his heart. “The only member of my staff who cares enough to ask how I feel. The big, bad ogre.”
“You’re not an ogre. You’re a pussy cat.”
“Pussy cat!” He laughed. “I appreciate that, Maddie. Thank you.”
“We all have to work together.”
He tried in vain to laugh again, but what was the use? He had control of the company he’d built for only one more hour. “There’s nothing anyone can do, but thank you for the thought. If you want my advice, you’ll find yourself another job. Just like my secretary did.”
“What price her loyalty, eh?”
He managed a half smile at that. “So, what do you want, Maddie? A raise? Sorry, but right now I’m in no position to give you one.”
She laughed lightly. “That’s okay. Right now, it’s not me who needs one.”
Strange answer. He frowned. “Then what do you want?”
She sauntered back to the door, turned the key in the lock, removed it, and turned back toward his desk, a look of determination in her bright blue eyes.
He straightened his back as she approached. “What are you doing?”
She smiled. “I’ve come to give you a raise.”
